Card Counting: Running Count, True Count and Common Myths

A count summarizes exposed-card composition. It can support a ruleset-specific estimate, yet it cannot reveal hidden cards or remove the ordinary variance of blackjack.

What a running count records

Hi-Lo assigns +1 to 2 through 6, 0 to 7 through 9, and -1 to tens and aces. Start at zero when a freshly shuffled deck or shoe begins. Add the tag for each exposed card. The sequence 3, 5, king, 7, queen, ace, 8, 5, 4, 2 produces a running count of +2.

A positive value means more low cards than high cards have been observed, so the unseen cards are relatively richer in high cards than they were at the shuffle. It describes a changing population, not a certain prediction of the next card.

Why a true count is needed in a shoe

A running count of +6 with six decks remaining describes one extra low-card tag per deck. With two decks remaining, it describes three tags per deck. The second state is more compositionally unusual.

The standard Hi-Lo conversion is running count divided by estimated decks remaining. The rounding convention must match the indexes and rules being used. Open the True Count tool at /en/counting/true-count to hold the running count fixed while changing decks remaining.

The count and playing decisions

Basic strategy remains the baseline because most hands have a clear best action without a count adjustment. Some borderline decisions can change when a true count crosses a published index for the exact game conditions.

Indexes depend on the counting system, deck count, dealer soft-17 rule, surrender rules, and blackjack-check treatment. A six-deck, dealer-stands-on-soft-17 index chart cannot be moved silently to a single-deck, dealer-hits-soft-17 table. What a positive true count can say

A high positive true count can shift the expected value of particular actions and wagers under the assumptions used to calibrate the system. The size of the shift depends on the complete ruleset, remaining penetration, deck-estimate accuracy, and the policy used after calculating the count.

It does not guarantee a winning hand, session, or next card. A count contains less information than the exact unseen composition. Even exact composition knowledge would still leave random order, dealer resolution, splits, doubles, and payoff variance.

Common myths worth discarding

  • A positive running count always means the same thing: decks remaining determine its scale.
  • Card counting changes the cards: it summarizes exposed cards and leaves the remaining order random.
  • The count replaces basic strategy: basic strategy supplies the default action.
  • Any count system works with any chart: tags, conversion, indexes, and rules form one package.
  • A favorable count means a session will finish ahead: expected value is a long-run average and short runs remain volatile.

Choose Hi-Lo, use its tags consistently, and estimate decks remaining in the increments required by the chosen indexes. Practice cards first.
